Celtic Goddesses and Gods




Airmid:Goddess of healing and medicinal plants. The water from the spring she guards will bring the dead back to life.

Boann: Goddess of bounty and fertility. She was wife of a water god named Nechtan, but had an affair with Dagda. The pair caused the sun to stand still for nine months so the child they conceived, Angus, could be born without Nechtan's knowledge.

Belenus: God of light. Watches over sheep and cattle. Husband of Belisama.

Belisama: Goddess of light and fire. Mistress of the forge. Married to Belenus.

Brigid:Also known as Brighid and Brigit. She is the goddess of healing, craftsmanship, wisdom and fire. Also, a patroness of poetry and learning. In Wales, where she is called Caridwen, she is thought to have in her possession the cauldron of knowledge and inspiration. She was so well-loved by the Celts, that when they became Christians, they refused to abandon her and made her a Christian saint.

Branwen: Goddess of love and beauty. She died of a broken heart when her brother Bran died in a war caused by her husband.

Cardiwen: Corn goddesss, mother of Taliesen, the greatest and wisest of all the bards and a patroness of poetry. Also known as Hen Wen and Brighid. Cardiwen lives among the stars in the land of Caer Sidi and is also associated with wolves.

Dagda: Earth and father god. Dagda has a bottomless cauldron of plenty and a harp that's music rules the seasons. With his mighty club, he can either kill 9 men with a single blow or bring them back to life, depending on whether he uses the small or big end.

Diancecht: God of healing. Killed his son because the aforesaid son's skill was greater than his own.

Donn: Donn sends storms and wrecks ships at sea. He, however protects cattle and crops. His descendents come to his island when they die.

Epona: Goddess of horses and horsemen. Also known as Rhiannon.

Govannon: A smith god. His weapons always hit their mark and his armours are indestructible. He is a healer as well.

Lug: A hero god of the sun. Also known as Lugh and Lleu. He is young and strong with golden hair and is the master of all arts, crafts and skills. Lug once went to the court of Dagda and demanded to be let in. The gatekeeper asked him what skills he had. For every one Lug named, the gatekeeper told him there was already an immortal in their court that had mastered it. Lug pointed out there were none that had mastered all and gained a place among the deities. He is identified with the Greek's Hermes. One of the most widely-worshipped of the Celtic gods.

Medb: Swift goddess of war. The mere sight ofher blinds her enemies.

Morrigan: Goddess of war and death. She is married to Dagda. Morrigan is able to take the shape of a raven. Those destined to die in upcoming battle see her washing bloody laundry.

Nuadhu: Also known as Nud, Lud and Nodens. God of healing and water, his name means "cloudmaker" or "wealth-bringer". In the first battle of Moytura, Nuadhu lost an arm and Dian Cecht replaced it with one made from silver. For obvious reasons, he is often called "Nhadhu of the silver arm".

Oenghus: God of attraction and fatal love. His kisses turn into singing birds and the music birds make draw all who hear it to him.

Ogma: A hero god of eloquence, genuis and language, also known as Ogmios. He is usually portrayed as an old man dressed in a lion's skin and from his tongue hang gold chains that are attached to the ears of his followers.
